Aspen Institute’s “Rising to the Challenge: Re-Envisioning Public Libraries” in Action

“Rising to the Challenge: Re-Envisioning Public Libraries,” developed by the Aspen Institute and funded by the Gates Foundation, presents a framework for library transformation in the 21st century. Learn how the report and the newly released Action Guide are being used to initiate thoughtful conversations with policy makers, government officials at all levels, library supporters, and library systems.

Susan Hildreth, Executive Director of the Peninsula Library System/Califa Group in San Mateo, California and an Aspen Institute fellow, will lead the session among early adopters of the framework. Panelists will discuss using the framework in a statewide context and for on-the-ground activities, convening community workshops and continuing education, as well as intersections with the Harwood process and the impact on local policy. Panelists will include:

Kendall Wiggin, Connecticut State Librarian and President, Chief Officers of State Library Agencies (COSLA)

Dawn La Valle, Director of the Connecticut Division of Library Development

Gina Millsap, CEO of the Topeka Shawnee County Public Library (Kansas) and Member, PLA Board of Directors

Cindy Fesemyer, Director of the Columbus Public Library, Columbus, Wisconsin

Maria Carpenter, Director of Library Services, Santa Monica, California
